Thanks to the losses scandal, the last Parliament has already left down in story as a decaying legislature. Is the pick up of MPs that collected in the House of Commons yesterday to symbol the opening of the new Parliament expected to be any some-more fondly remembered by posterity?
In a little respects, the cover can already be seen as an improvement. The new Parliament is some-more deputy of the nation at large, with some-more female, some-more racial minority, and some-more happy MPs than before. And carrying witnessed the torments of their predecessors over expenses, the new money coming in is majority doubtful to be as arrogant with their second-home allowances.
But these MPs do not need merely to be clean. They need to be brave. For where this Parliament unequivocally needs to infer itself is in the family with the executive. Britain needs a poised legislature, rebuilt to mount up to the Government if it tries to make use of legislation as a open family exercise, or to impel by really bad created laws.
Parliaments name has frequency been so low. The plea and the event for this new stand of parliamentarians is to lift it behind up to where it belongs.
